Yes, the Sixties changed everything, even the way we read and the reasons we read. Or, rather, the Sixties unloosed a chain of changes that still influence readers, writers, and publishers. We will look at selected passages from Cather's novel to see how those passages might have attracted new readers at different times, all the while gathering clues as to how a novel becomes a "classic."
